WRIT 5320 - Advanced Writing with Technology has provided new insights on how I can work with technology to create written works and scholarly projects. Dr. Bianchi provides her students with non-traditional reading pieces. The diverse texts have helped me understand how I can apply the text’s ideas to current and upcoming projects both for CRDM and my future career. For example, analysis of Black Mirror episodes and various pieces of selected text has widened my understanding of the importance of user-interface, editing, use of colors and type, navigation, wording, and layout when designing a website or piece of electronic literature. Some of my favorite pieces have been non-traditional, such as the works from Nick Montfort, Sean Morey, Madison Jones, Jacob Greene, and the various Twine games. Ideas from Donna Harraway, Trevor Owens, and Katherine Hayles have also helped me understand how technology can be used to further expand upon human ideas and creative expression through ideas of post-humanism and the importance of creating a digital archive. In addition to the readings, I have also been able to design a movie poster, movie trailer, website, Twine game, and be a part of the creation of a digital archive. These projects have allowed me to learn about various cost-effective resources available to me when making projects that deal with creating a video trailer, print advertisement, or game. The creative process has also allowed me to work with fellow CRDM students through discussion posts and in-person to develop my organization and teamwork skills. This class has also made me become a more critical thinker when looking at pieces to determine their purpose, structure, and how I can implement similar techniques for when I go to work on my thesis. Overall, I think this was a very successful semester and I am excited to take more courses that deal with digital media.
